Lung Nodules

Being told you have a spot or nodule on your lung can be an unsettling and frightening experience — but it is important to know that the vast majority of lung nodules are benign, meaning they are not cancer. Nodules are often discovered incidentally on imaging performed for other reasons, and most will simply require routine monitoring over time to ensure they remain stable.

That said, some nodules do require a closer look. Depending on the size, shape, and characteristics of a nodule, as well as your personal risk factors, your physician may recommend additional imaging, a PET scan, or a tissue biopsy to better understand what the nodule is. These steps are not a cause for alarm — they are simply the careful, thorough approach your care deserves.

We understand that waiting for answers is one of the hardest parts of this process. Our team is here not only to provide expert diagnostic evaluation, but also to support you and your family every step of the way. You are not alone in this, and we will work with you to find answers as efficiently and compassionately as possible.

Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS)

Endobronchial ultrasound, or EBUS, is a minimally invasive procedure that allows our physicians to visualize and sample lymph nodes and masses located in and around the airways, without the need for surgery. Using a specialized bronchoscope equipped with an ultrasound probe, we are able to obtain tissue samples in real time with a high degree of accuracy. EBUS is most commonly used to evaluate enlarged lymph nodes, stage lung cancer, or investigate unexplained masses in the chest. It is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning most patients return home the same day.

Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy

The Ion robotic bronchoscopy system by Intuitive is one of the most advanced tools available for the evaluation of lung nodules, allowing our physicians to navigate deep into the lung with a level of precision and control that was previously unachievable. Using an ultra-thin, flexible robotic catheter guided by real-time 3D imaging, we are able to reach and biopsy nodules in areas of the lung that traditional bronchoscopy cannot access. This minimally invasive approach means less risk compared to surgical biopsy, a faster recovery, and the ability to get answers sooner. For patients with lung nodules that require tissue sampling, Ion represents a state-of-the-art option that combines safety, accuracy, and efficiency. It is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning most patients return home the same day.
